Invitation to submit
Wallingford Chorus is preparing for its upcoming spring concert “River of Dreams” to be performed on May 6, 2017. The theme of the concert is “Searching”, and the Chorus is seeking local poets of all ages to submit works on this theme to be incorporated into the concert.
Matt Campisi, director of the Chorus, explained his inspiration for this concert. “I programmed songs that have to do with humans searching for something greater—meaning, love, friendship, or a better world. Everyone is searching for something, and I wonder if that search every truly ends. Do we ever find what we are looking for?”
Songs to be performed include “Circle of Life” by Elton John, “All You Need Is Love” and “Let It Be” by the Beatles, “When You Believe” from the movie The Prince of Egypt, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, and Ruth Elaine Schram‘s arrangement of the Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken”.
Mr. Campisi wants to tap into local talent to complement his selection of songs. We invite the public to submit original poems on our theme of searching for peace, love, friendship, justice, youth, etc. You name it. And poems can come from anyone, children included. There are no age requirements for your poem to be considered. Five to eight poems will be selected by Mr. Campisi and a panel of judges to be read at the concert.
Wallingford Chorus Poetry Submission Guidelines
Poems can be any form, meter, or length. Length depends on the pace at which the piece will be read aloud. Poets should strive for their spoken piece to be between 30-90 seconds.
Consider our audience. Our audience will be comprised of mostly adults and seniors, with the next largest demographic being high school and college students. Freedom of expression and creative word usage is encouraged! Profanity and derogatory terms are not.
Winners will be asked to read the poems themselves during the concert on May 6, 2017. If the poet is unable to attend or would prefer to not read the poem, the poet must work with the chorus to make alternative arrangements.
Poets will practice with the Chorus during two rehearsals before the show (projected poet rehearsal dates are the evenings of Tuesday, May 2, and Friday, May 5).
Poems connected to the theme of “Searching” can be sent via email to Wallingford Chorus by hitting the submit button below or send directly to the chorus email address, firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “Poetry Submission." Please paste your submission into the body of the email. No attachments, please. Poems can also be mailed to Wallingford Chorus, PO Box 4451, Wallingford, CT 06492.
All submissions must include the author’s name, mailing address, email, and phone number. Poems submitted by children and young adults must include their guardian’s contact information as well. Deadline for submission is April 1, 2017. Winners will be notified by April 15, 2017. Selected poems will be printed in the summer issue of Wallingford Magazine. (July 2017)
